TEACHER

Harriet Schock is, in my opinion, one of the few who have earned the right to be called a ‘songwriting teacher.’ This is simply because she, herself, is a living, breathing virtuoso.

School of Songwriting

Harriet teaches Songwriting Classes around her dining room table, provides One-on-One Private Consultations, delivers her Online Songwriting Course as well as Song Critiques via e-mail, and teaches at selected Seminars and Workshops.

Harriet Schock teaches a step-by-step method that enables songwriters to become remarkable at writing songs — songs that touch people emotionally. Harriet doesn’t simply coach a student through the writing of one song. She teaches a technique that students can use now and in the future to make every single song the very best it can be.

Addressing You

The Harriet Schock Songwriting Course addresses you as an individual. Not stressing any particular style of music or lyric, the course takes you from where you are now with your songwriting ability to a place of greater competence and creativity.

Problems such as beginning a song and not knowing how to finish it, unclear or illogical lyrics, lack of response from listeners, weak melody, uncompelling harmony, and other difficulties that can plague songwriters seem to vanish when a writer uses the system taught in Harriet’s course. Every muscle of songwriting gets strengthened.

Each student receives personal attention from Harriet, making every lesson a valuable learning experience. This is the same course that Harriet has taught at the University of Southern California and in Phoenix under the auspices of the Arizona Songwriter’s Association as well as for the Songwriters Guild of America.

For the Professional and the Novice

The more experienced you are, the more you will get out of the course. Though not designed for beginners, if you are new to songwriting, Harriet’s course can be adapted to suit your level of experience and ability. As a novice you will build your confidence and develop good songwriting habits from the start.

As a professional you will fine-tune your skills and address some of the problems you may have encountered. If you are somewhere between novice and professional, Harriet’s course will help you develop your style and become remarkable at writing songs.

Private Consultation and Song Critiques

Private Consultation (Los Angeles)

Harriet Schock offers one-on-one in-person coaching and mentoring for songwriters of all levels. The fee for this private consultation is $65 a session (1/2 hour). Many songwriters take Harriet’s entire course privately which consists of ten 1/2 hour sessions at the discounted rate of $625 when paid at the time of the first session (reg. $650). Payment can be made in person by cash, check or credit card.

Online Song Critiques

Songwriting Consultation Services and Critiques are generally offered to qualified students who have completed Harriet’s 10-week Songwriting Course. In rare instances, a student who has not done the course may qualify. E-Mail Harriet with any questions or to arrange an interview.

Harriet’s method of critiquing songs focuses on what is good or right about a song and expanding those strong points. This service is offered for $65 per song, which includes one rewrite. If songs are sent as a package, then the cost is $65 for the first song and $40 for each additional song (up to three songs).

Critiquing can be done by regular mail or e-mail. In either case, be sure to include the the song lyrics and your recording(s) in your e-mail, or e-mail Harriet for her mailing address to send same via post.

To pay for your Online Song Critique(s), choose one of the three options below:

1 Song Critique
2 Song Critiques
3 Song Critiques

Regarding Harriet Schock’s consultation, let me give you an analogy: your car stops running, you open the hood and stand gawking at a confusing collection of metal, wire, and rubber, you poke around, hit something, and the car starts. Next time it happens, you can’t remember where you poked to make it go. You might get it started, you might poke and further disable it. You might give up, close the hood, and decide to stop driving for good.

Well, songs, like cars, have their parts and if you don’t understand them you could get stranded. Harriet Schock’s system is to thank for the better songs I have written. I would not dare show the songs I wrote before I began studying with her except to show how much I have grown and improved since.

You have kept me going and are best teacher I ever had or will have. The closest people in my life can not reach and inspire me the way that you have.
Marian Weiner

I wanted to say that it is really a pleasure to be in your class. You show the most amazing insight when you talk to people. That is probably why you are such a great songwriter.
Cameron Weckerley

Thank you so much for the advice. In a world so torn by misused trust it’s a great feeling to know there are still some genuine people still out there !!!!
Jamie Pruett

It was a wonderful class today. What a neat and diverse group of people. The class is developing really nicely, and has its own je ne sais quoi … oh yeah, I know what it has … YOU, in action … no holds barred. You have the finest ear, sharpest mind and quickest wit of anyone I can think of. Wow.
Linda Geleris

I can’t tell you how many composers put so much “noodling” and effects processing into their songs, that the soul of the song is completely lost.

You never make that mistake and I thank you for teaching me and being a presence in my life to remind me of what a great composer is.
