When I first heard Harriet Schock's Helen Reddy meets Joan Baez meets Phoebe Snow vocal style I thought that she was very similar in her approach and presentation of a song as those folk-pop icons. Well, much to my surprise, or lack of knowledge about the artist, I found out that she wrote Helen Reddy's hit song in 1975, "Ain't No Way To Treat A Lady." Reddy sounds like Harriet or Harriet sounds like Reddy? Well, it doesn't matter. It worked out that they sound alike because of this connection they have. What ever way you look at it, Schock has been at it for a long time writing great songs, as her new "Live" release will attest. There are two venues and dates that are recorded, Genghis Cohen (Oct. 4, 2000) in Los Angeles and The Coffee Gallery Backstage (Oct. 5, 2000) in Pasadena.

I was taken aback by the compelling appeal of the stories found in Schock's hum along toe-tapping tunes. It's not just her voice and piano playing that grab you, it's the ardor and emotion found in every word and note. Good music isn't only about what you hear; it's about what you can feel when you listen. You know you are in for a fantastical musical merry-go-round when she starts to sing "OK, You Win, I Give Up, You're Right, I'm Gone." The words just melt you like butter and have you thinking about your life and the similar situations you may have been in. Thought provoking music with an engaging sound track is what this CD provides, along with ample mood and dialogue in between songs. Her rich and endearing vocalisms will enchant you, making finding a common ground unavoidable.

This woman is legendary in music circles and has contributed more than music and lyrics in her career, she also wrote a popular book titled "Becoming Remarkable: For Songwriters and Those Who Love Songs" (Blue Dolphin Press, 1999), which has served as guide post for budding artists.
Get this CD for the love of from-the-heart musical storytelling, get it for the good feeling all over it will give you. Harriet Schock is as original and down to earth as they come. Listen closely to this songbird with a tale to tell and music that will help to turn the pages in the book of your heart. In a world of synthetic products and people this is a reminder of our humanity, sensitivity, and that the music can be as real as we are.
